Sports Massage was originally developed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. Sports massage emphasises prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons.
But you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit from sports massage. Sports massage is also good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted movement. The treatment will usually concentrate on a specific problem area and will use some elements of Swedish Massage as well as stimulating trigger points to break down adhesions (muscle knots). Karl also uses stretches and joint mobilisations and will often advise a series of exercises to help.
If you are an athlete, you can use Sports Massage at specific times in your event calendar:
- Pre-event – a short, stimulating massage 15 – 45 minutes before the event directed toward the parts of the body that will be involved in the exertion.
- Post-event – within an hour or two of the event, to normalise the body’s tissues and help prevent lactic acid buildup.
- Restorative massage – during training to allow you to train harder and with less injury.
- Rehabilitative massage – aimed at alleviating pain due to injury.
