Acupuncture is one of the oldest recorded forms of medicine and has been used in China for over 3,000 years. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, energy, called Chi or Qi, flows freely through the body in channels called meridians. When there is a blockage in the channel the energy becomes stagnant and causes illness. Stimulation by an acupuncture needle at specific points on these meridians helps to restore the healthy flow of energy in the body.

Modern science has shown that acupuncture stimulates the brain to produce natural pain relieving chemicals (endorphins). These assist the body to heal itself and give pain relief. The NICE guidelines also recommend acupuncture for chronic back pain and acupuncturists treat a wide range of conditions in a holistic way.

During a session, very fine needles are inserted into points on your skin. These needles may be left in for up to a few minutes while you relax.

Acupuncture at The Carrick Clinic

Simon Littlejohn uses acupuncture as part of his treatment for pain relief in the lower leg and foot. This can be included as part of his podiatry and biomechanics sessions. Please contact us for more details.

Aromatherapy is a type of massage using essential oils. Essential oils have been used as far back as Roman and Egyptian times for their health giving properties and are distilled from aromatic plants. Aromatherapists create a blend of oils specifically for you which are then diluted in a carrier oil (like Grapeseed Oil or Sweet Almond Oil). The oils are then massaged into the skin and the body can benefit from their medicinal properties.

Aromatherapy is deeply relaxing and can be a very indulgent treat, but it can also be used to help alleviate many troublesome common ailments.

So that they can choose the best blend of oils for you, the aromatherapist will go through a consultation with you, checking any medical conditions you may have or any pharmaceutical medicine you may be taking. They will then carefully select and blend your unique mix.

In Biomechanics we examine foot function and the effect this has on the rest of the body. By assessing your posture and analysing your gait, our therapist can see whether any misalignment in the foot is causing problems further up the body.

The solution is prescription orthotics – custom made insoles. These insoles can correct any misalignment and relieve stress on the skeleton, leading to pain relief.

The assessment is carried out by our Health Professions Council registered podiatrist Simon Littlejohn who also supplies any orthotics required.

Most people require a biomechanical assessment because they are experiencing pain in the lower part of the body. The pain could be anywhere from the feet themselves, up to the lower back or hips. For more information, or to talk to Simon, contact us at the clinic and we’ll be pleased to help.

Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is the oldest form of medicine known to man. It means using whole plants – leaf, root, berry, flower and bark to create medicines. Countless drugs are still derived from plant sources and more than 80% of the world’s population still depend on herbal medicine for survival.

Herbal medicine can support the body to heal itself or while it is undergoing orthodox treatment. Some people prefer to use herbal medicine as a lifestyle choice. Some people turn to herbal medicine to assist them with a chronic illness, often where orthodox medicine has been unable to help. Patients with long term conditions can find a new level of wellbeing using herbal medicine either alongside or in place of their orthodox treatment.

Medical herbalists are taught to diagnose medicine in the same way as orthodox doctors but believe in treating a patient holistically to achieve the best results. This means treating the person, not the disease and getting to the root cause of the problem not just relieving symptoms. Herbalists encourage patients to play an active role in their own wellbeing. Herbalists mix individual medicines for each patient. They have studied herb/drug interactions and know which plants can be used safely with specific pharmaceuticals. They can work in partnership with your GP or other health care provider. As balanced, natural products, herbal medicines have few side effects and are often more gentle on the body than modern drugs. However, herbs are powerful and it is always recommended that you consult a fully qualified medical herbalist rather than self-medicating as the strength and potential interactions of some herbs may be missed. Our herbalist, Pamela Spence is a Member of the National Institute of Herbal Medicine. This means she has completed a stringent training regime to degree level, alongside a minimum 500 hours of clinical practice. Members must adhere to a strict code of ethics and a robust programme of Continuing Professional Development.

What’s involved in a herbal consultation?

  • An initial consultation lasts for one hour. This allows the herbalist to get a complete picture of your overall health as well as focusing on the specific health problem. A blood pressure reading will usually be taken.
  • The herbalist will develop a treatment plan tailored to your particular needs and the appropriate herbal medicine will be dispensed. Dietary and lifestyle changes may be discussed.
  • Medicine is usually in the form of a tincture (taken 2-3 times/day).
  • A follow-up appointment is arranged for 3 weeks later to monitor progress and supply more medicine. Subsequent visits if required follow at 3 or 6 week intervals.
  • The length of treatment varies with each individual case.
  • All clinic records are securely kept and patient information treated with absolute confidentiality.

Kinetic Chain Release

Return to balance

Most children have perfect posture but as you grow your body can stray from its natural alignment and then aches, pains and stresses build up. When this happens you feel more tense and restricted, physically and energetically.

There can be many contributing factors - you may have had a fall or accident, difficulties in pregnancy or childbirth, sporting injuries, wear and tear from your working life, leg length difference, be dealing with stress or simply aware you're not standing straight and walking tall. Things just don't feel right in the way you move.

Kinetic Chain Release (KCR) gently releases tension in key joints in the body using a protocol of specific stretches. This allows your body to release restrictions and return to its natural alignment. Your improved posture helps to re-establish balance and bring a sense of ease back into your everyday movements. This also positively affects other systems in your body systems like your digestion, or nervous system. This is because your body is more relaxed so it can work more harmoniously and effectively.

Is KCR for you?

If you live with chronic pain Kinetic Chain Release (KCR) is an excellent way to alleviate or even resolve pain. Many people have reported finding an improvement after just one, or a short series of treatments.

Everyone's body is unique and yours will respond in its own way, however patients regularly report changes like: feeling freer; more relaxed; looser; taller; calmer; sleeping better and having significantly diminished pain levels or even resolution of pain and tightness. Crucially your energy (or Chi) has room to flow freely again in your body.

KCR is appropriate for joint or back pain and may also be able to relieve insomnia, anxiety, headaches & migraines, IBS and fibromyalgia. Some athletes also use KCR to enhance athletic performance.

Origins of KCR

Kinetic Chain Release (KCR) is a method that has been devised and personally taught by inspiring Scottish Physiotherapist Hugh Gilbert. It is now being taught in Canada, USA, Ireland, Hawaii and beyond. Janet McLellan is an accredited practitioner working at The Carrick Clinic.

This is what Hugh has to say about his method:

'Kinetic Chain Release (KCR) seeks to unblock, harmonise and balance the physical body and its energies. Therefore our goal is not simply to focus on correcting or compensating for your physical conditions and circumstances, but also to restore and enhance the free flow of the life force within you. It is a tool which should belong to everyone, and one day will.' - Hugh Gilbert

What happens in a KCR session?

KCR is a series of stretches carried out while you are lying on the massage table. You will be fully clothed other than shoes. KCR is suitable for any age, including children.

Please contact us for more information.

Hot Stone Massage

A Hot Stone Massage is a very relaxing treatment that uses heat to reach muscle tension at the deepest level, allowing the muscles to relax more quickly than with normal massage. Smooth, volcanic stones are heated in water and placed on energy centres on the body, called chakras, while others are used to perform the massage.

The deep sense of relaxation also helps to relieve mental stress and give a feeling of wellbeing. Blood and lymph circulation is increased in the tissues, assisting the body’s natural detox process. As with any massage, benefits include relief of aches and pains, reduced feelings of stress and less muscle tension.

Lynsey Mounce is qualified to give Hot Stone Massage at The Carrick Clinic.

Remedial Massage

Remedial massage is a deep tissue massage that is used to target specific back and limb problems. The massage helps the body to detoxify by increasing blood and lymph circulation to the tissues. This helps the body to release toxins into the circulation where they can be carried out of the body.

Remedial massage therapists have comprehensive training in anatomy and physiology and are able to identify which muscles to concentrate their massage on to relieve tension and improve tone.

Regular massage can be an important part of any health regime and helps to alleviate pain and strains caused by old injuries, poor posture and physical tension.

Both Karl Grimm and Lynsey Mounce are qualified remedial massage therapists on our team. Karl uses his training as part of his treatments at The Pain Clinic.

Sports Massage

Sports Massage was originally developed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. Sports massage emphasises prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons. Karl Grimm is the Sports Massage Therapist at The Carrick Clinic.

But you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit from sports massage. Sports massage is also good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted movement. The treatment will usually concentrate on a specific problem area and will use some elements of Swedish Massage as well as stimulating trigger points to break down adhesions (muscle knots). Karl also uses stretches and joint mobilisations and will often advise a series of exercises to help.

If you are an athlete, you can use Sports Massage at specific times in your event calendar:

  • Pre-event – a short, stimulating massage 15 – 45 minutes before the event directed toward the parts of the body that will be involved in the exertion.
  • Post-event – within an hour or two of the event, to normalise the body’s tissues and help prevent lactic acid buildup.
  • Restorative massage – during training to allow you to train harder and with less injury.
  • Rehabilitative massage – aimed at alleviating pain due to injury.

Karl uses a combination of mobilisations, massage and an interferential machine in his sessions as part of the Carrick Clinic Clinic. If you are a sports person with specific training needs, please contact us to discuss this with Karl.

Swedish Massage

Swedish Massage is one of the most common types of massage and combines various techniques including kneading and friction to help break up muscle knots, called adhesions. Plant based oils nourish the skin and help the therapist to work on the body. The massage can be slow and gentle or more vigorous, depending on the client’s wishes.

The father of Swedish massage was Per Henrik Ling (1776-1839), a physiologist and fencing master. He developed a system called ‘Medical Gymnastics’ which included this form of massage and became known as the ‘Swedish Movement Cure’. Today it is simply known as Swedish massage or classic massage.

Swedish massage uses five styles of long, flowing strokes to massage. The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fibre) and vibration.

Swedish massage has shown to be helpful in reducing pain, joint stiffness and improving function in patients with osteoarthritis. It can also be used to increase circulation.

Neurofeedback (NFB) is a non-invasive technique that helps children train their brains to function more effectively. NFB helps children to manage tasks that require concentration – like schoolwork. It is particularly successful for children who have AD(H)D and hyperactivity. Most importantly, NFB is fun and children really enjoy their training sessions.

During a session a child’s brain activity is measured by sensors on their scalp and they can see their brainwaves moving on a screen. The NFB trainer analyses the brainwaves to see whether any are too high, or too low. They will then set levels for the child to achieve during the session. The aim is to enable conscious control of brainwave activity. Our mental state depends on our brainwave activity. Some frequencies assist us to be focussed and concentrated while others can make us feel nervous and panicky. Hyperactive children typically have more of the waves that cause anxiety and panic and too few waves assisting focus and concentration. NFB can help them learn how to modify these waves to promote calm and concentration.

When a child manages to match the more positive brainwaves they get immediate feedback to let them know that they have done well. The feedback can be winning points in a computer game or even moving cars on a real toy race track.

There has been research into using NFB to help:

  • ADHD with full range of symptoms
  • Poor concentration
  • Behavioural disorders
  • Impulsiveness
  • Learning disabilities
  • Disinhibition
  • Insatiability
  • Disorganisation
  • Emotional instability

‘An imperial college study showed that 97 students at the Royal College of Music had significantly improved instrumental technique after a course of neurofeedback.’ - The Times, September 30th 2006

‘The use of EEG Biofeedback in schools can provide an effective alternative to psycho-stimulant medications (for ADHD). It can become part of the student’s scheduled, weekly activities’ - Journal of Neurotherapy (2-4) 6

‘…the clinical effects of neurofeedback in the treatment of ADHD can be regarded as clinically meaningful… in line with the AAPB and ISNR guidelines for rating clinical efficacy, we conclude that neurofeedback treatment for ADHD can be considered “Efficacious and Specific” (Level 5) with a large ES for inattention and impulsivity and a medium ES for hyperactivity. - Journal of Clinical EEG & Neuroscience, July, 2009

Neurofeedback at The Carrick Clinic

Karl Grimm studied Neurofeedback at the Neurofeedback Institute Switzerland (NIS) and with Sue Othmer of the EEG Institute and established the successful NFB training centre at Salem International, Germany for five years. He also initiated specialist holiday camps for children with ADHD in Germany which he still helps to run today. Contact us to have a chat with Karl about how NFB might be able to help your child.

Reflexology is a complementary therapy where the therapist applies pressure to specific points on the feet, and sometimes on the hands, that encourage the body to heal itself and bring itself back into balance (homeostasis). This ancient technique is based on the idea that the feet and hands are like miniature maps of the whole body – each area corresponding to a different body part. By applying pressure to these areas using the fingers and thumbs a reflexologist can stimulate healing in the corresponding area of the body.

Reflexology is deeply relaxing and is a gentle, non-invasive way to help increase overall wellbeing.

At The Carrick Clinic, reflexology is carried out by Lynsey Mounce and Fiona Smith, who have years of experience working with patients of all ages.

Reiki has become a very popular, relaxing treatment over the last 10 years in the West although it has been known for much longer than that in Japan. Reiki is a gentle, energetic treatment that helps the body to regain balance and supports it to heal. Following the system of energy centres, or chakras, in the body, the Reiki therapist places their hands near the body and allows Reiki energy to flow through their hands.

People can have very different experiences while having a Reiki treatment. Some notice a gentle tingling sensation, a feeling of warmth or coolness while others simply feel deeply relaxed. It is common for a person to be lulled to sleep by the treatment and to then wake up feeling full of energy.

As Reiki is a totally non-invasive therapy, there are really no contra-indications to having a treatment. Your body remains in control of the energy flow at all times.
